The Imperial is also within easy walking distance of both the local bus and train stations (approximately 5 & 10 minutes) and local shopping amenities.

Merthyr Tydfil and the Imperial Hotel are ideally situated in the South Wales Valleys for those wishing to explore the area either on foot or by car for leisure, business or industrial history.

The Brecon Beacons and the Taff Trail await to be explored by the walker or cyclist. Rivers and reservoirs beckon the fisherman to throw a line. Boats for sea fishing can be charted in Cardiff, Swansea or the Mumbles. If you prefer shopping, restaurants, bars, theatres, castles and craft shops then Cardiff, Swansea and the Mumbles are but a short journey by car (20-40 minutes)..

Merthyr Tydfil and area have a wealth of industrial heritage to see, it was once regarded as the engine of the industrial revolution due to the abundance of coal and iron. Trevithick built the first working steam train engine in Merthyr Tydfil. Made in Dowlais can still be found on steam engines operating in the world today.

Merthyr Tydfil can claim to many notable individuals - Laura Ashley - fashion designer and business woman - born in Dowlias. Julien Macdonald - fashion designer and along with two world boxing champions are but a few Merthyr people who have made an impression in the wider world in recent years.
